READING TIPS
Reading is an important life skill. In a literate society building good reading habits in children will build language and confidence and help your child to succeed. Many parents feel at a lost especially when it comes to reading and knowing how to help their child. Below are some reading tips to help you get off on the right track and sustain the support you give to help your child becoming a good reader
  • Create the right environment - Surround your child with books from birth and make sure that books are a natural part of the household. Reserve a place for books in your home and make sure that your child has a place for their own books. This could be a box, basket or a small shelf in their room.
  • Read to your child everyday for 10-15 minutes.  Choose the right place and time for reading. Most children like to have a book read at bedtime.
  • Take your child to the library and get them their own library card.
  • Dads for reading – let them see different members of the family reading, especially dads – the whole family reading together can be fun.
  • Reading for pleasure is fun. Let your child see your reading different materials:  magazines, newspapers, books and they will want to copy your reading habits.
  • World of words – there are words everywhere - signs, posters, labels - point them out to your child as you go about your daily activities.
  • Give books as gifts to your children.
  • Make a visit to a bookshop and buy your child a book as a treat.
